Research and development

A customer might approach me with the question "is there any way of making a device that will do such-and such, is very small and can run off an AA-sized battery for 2 years?" I would research into techniques that might be applicable (for example using a very low powered radar to power a sensor and receive information back from it, using microwaves to measure certain properties of an object without touching or being near it, imaging objects through walls), then produce a feasibility study.

Prototype design

Having discussed the viability of the product with the customer, I would go ahead and make a small number of prototypes, of a quality that could be trialled and tested, but perhaps not fit for mass production.

Trials

I can assist the customer with trials, or carry out the investigations myself. A final report is produced. Type approval and CE marking are often necessary before putting the product in to production.

 Preparing for production

Once the trials have been completed, the cost and difficulty of production is considered. In most cases, manufacturers are not able to set up RF circuitry (such as a filter) so this has to be addressed beforehand. 

Software, Gerber files, mechanical drawings, test specs and a detailed parts list form the deliverables for the contract. The customer usually has the equipment made by his preferred supplier. I liase with the manufacturer, particularly in terms of the BOM and component choices.
